just a little something for anybody

john Parnell, last name should be spelled PENALL, was native. According

to the nova Scotia archives and records department a letter that was dated in 1842 was sent
from Joseph Howe, the Indian commissioner, to David Dimock of gold
river. this letter was regarding the supervision of expenditure for
installation of a chimney and windows in john PENNALL"S houseworks -
fonds/ collection: commissioner of public records - series: Indians -
retrieval no: rg 1 vol 432 pp. 122 - 123.

Another letter was sent from daniel Krolland of Chester Basin to Joseph Howe
regarding Mi'kmaq at Gold River and services as a teacher
rendered by him. Mentions John PENNALL. includes Howe,s
response agreeing to pay krolland upon receipt of proper
paperwork.
Date: 1843
Fonds/Collection: Commissioner of Public Records
Series: Indians
Rerference no: RG1 vol. 432 pp. 163 - 165

The fact that there are these two letters that were either was sent to or received from Joseph Howe , whom was at that time the Indian Commissioner , suggests that he was native.

Joseph Howe 1843

A small log house for a very aged couple, has been build at Marigomishe, and John Penall,s house , at Gold River, has been repaired, under the superintendance of Mr. Dimock.

Below is part of page 346 from the book
HISTORY OF THE COUNTY OF LUNENBURG.
Mather B. DesBrisay.
Judge of County Courts, and Member of the Historical Society of Nova Scotia.

Entered, according to the Act of the Parliament of Canada, in the year one thousand eight
hundred and ninety •five, by Mathbr Bvlbs DesBrisay,' BridKewater, Nova -Scotia,
in the office of the Minister of Agriculture, at Ottawa.

The Indians had several places of burial in the county. At
Indian Point, near Mahone Bay, there is a graveyard, to
which Captain Cope's remains were taken, and the bodies of
others who died at La Have and other settlements. Thither
were brought from Gold River the remains of Fi'ancis, Newell,
and Peter, father and bixjthers of John Penall, who lived near
Gold River bridge, and who was a most expert fly-fisher for
salmon, while Joseph, another brother, who also dieii at Gold
River, " sleeps his last sleep " in the Roman Catholic burial-
ground at Chester.

another source

The Joseph Penall [Pennaul] whose grave is in the Catholic cemetery in
Chester, was a well-known Mi'kmaq guide from Gold River. The stone reads:
"In Memory of Joseph Penall, Indian, by William Chearnley, A.D. 1859. Gone
to death's 'call' is Indian Joe. Moose deer rejoice, here buried, rests
your deadliest foe" Chearnley was Indian Agent for Nova Scotia in the
1850s. Somewhere around here I have info from Dr. Ruth Whitehead of the
Nova Scotia Museun on how some native surnames came to be, including Penall,
which I think is from the french 'Bernard'.

Deborah Trask
Curator Emeritus
Nova Scotia Museum

All of the above confirm the Native claim.

WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING VERY SHORTLY .Dimock, Joseph; (edited by George E. Levy), The Diary and Related Writings of the Reverend Joseph Dimock (1768-1846) . Published by Lancelot Press for Acadia Divinity College and Baptist Historical Committee of the United Baptist Convention of the Atlantic Provinces, 1979
Like most of his ministerial contemporaries, Joseph Dimock kept a diary for most of his adult life. Covering the period from 13 Oct. 1796 to 15 Dec. 1844, it is preserved in the Atlantic Baptist Hist. Coll., Acadia Univ. (Wolfville, N.S.) a book that may answer a lot of questions about the gold river area

What surnames are you researching? Westhaver & Schenkle

Comments:
I am trying to locate where my greatgrandfather was buried.  His name was John Enos Westhaver, born Nov. 13, 1858, near Lunenburg, NS.  My grandmother was born Oct. 12, 1888, in East Middle LaHave, NS.  In 1889 her mother received a letter from a Mrs. John Foote in Carbonear, Newfoundland, saying that she was so sorry to tell her about her husband's death, that she & her husband had cared for him the last two weeks or so that he was alive.  I can't find if he was buried in Carbonear, buried at sea, or returned to his wife in East Middle LaHave.  His wife was Sarah Georiana Schenkle.

What surnames are you researching? Thompson, Huey,Hewye or Huy and Oickle

Comments:
My relatives were in the Bridgewater area of NS.  Joseph Thompson, originally from Tripoli, Syria at that time came to Canada via the US, possibly New York.  He may have had a brother in the Yarmouth area.  His parents were with them as well.  Joseph married Blanch Laura Huey, and had a large family of which my maternal Grandmother was his eldest, Bessie Mae who died in 1975.  She married Percy Leon Oickle, and my mother is their youngest child Reta Helen, now age 82.

I am hoping to gain some insight into the Thompson family and Huey's as well.  We are decended from Johanne EICHEL of the late 1700's, now known as largely the Oickle family.

Any thoughts or connections would be greatly appreciated.

What surnames are you researching? Hubley

Comments:
Good day!  I am finding out that an Ancestor of mine was baptized in the Dutch Reform Church.  Does this church still exist?  If not, where about do you think the church stood in the Lunenburg area?  If someone died in Lunenburg around 1802, where about do you think this person would be buried?  One person I am thinking of in particular is Ulrich Hubley.  He died on January 19, 1802 in Lunenburg.  Is there some sort of database located online some where to search for people who died and where they may be buried for folks from the LUnenburg area.

Thank you so much for your help!!  I really appreciate it!!  Take care!  If possible, please email me back at khamill@hfx.eastlink.ca.  Thanks again.

I am trying to form a link between Daniel McCarty(McCarthy) born about 1807 in County Cork Ireland, Mother, Mary Carty, Father Unknown and Martin McCarty (McCarthy) born about 1806 in County Cork Ireland. Daniel had a son, Martin James who immigrated to the United States. I am descended from that Martin. The Martin, born in 1806, apparently tried to emigrate and due to a shipwreck found himself in Nova Scotia. I do not have any further information about Mary or her son Michael.

I suspect that a researcher with pure motivations but bad instincts has written "Mary Wood" into the Township Book entries, and thus rendered the birth records incorrect. John Vaughan married Mary Wood in 1755 in Rhode Island but she died without issue soon after. In 1759 John married, second, Virtue (Waite) Tripp in Rhode Island and she bore all of the Vaughan children. My guess is that someone who didn't know that Mary Wood had died and that John Vaughan had married a second time was trying to help out fellow researchers of the Vaughan family.
Would someone please check the books and help me out?
